Mercury Displacement Relays (MDRs) outperform and outlast mechanical contactors on all types of resistive (heating) loads. MDRs have superior features to standard electromechanical contactors in heating systems. The MDR, unlike a contactor, does not move contact points. It activates a plunger that raises or lowers the level of mercury to make or break an electrical connection. The liquid mercury creates a fresh, new contact surface for each cycle, avoiding the frequent cause of contactor failure. This type of construction allows the relay to operate for millions of cycles. Frequent relay cycling is necessary to regulate oven temperatures and is usually becomes the cause of shortened relay life.
Important note about relay"COIL POWER"selection
The "Control Coil" is the winding of electrical wire on the relay . When the "Control Coil" is energized, it creates a magnetic field to close the relay's power poles and turn power ON to the heating elements.
The "Control Coil" POWER is the voltage rating of the "Control Coil".
The "Control Coil" POWER may (or may not) be the same as the “Line voltage”.
The "Control Coil" POWER must match the voltage output from the controlling device such as a Temperature controller.
